Whether you are proactive about raising your children or not, they learn daily, both subconsciously and consciously, from the environment where they find themselves. Therefore, you need to be quite proactive in parenting your children.
The question then is, how do you as a parent prevail to raise your children to turn out right?
I would want to use the model of the boy Jesus, to show what your focus should be in raising your children.
Luke 2:52 says that Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and favour before God and man. From this scripture, there are three key areas you should pay attention to in raising your children – their physical development (their body and intellect), their personality development (character and associations) and most importantly, their spiritual development. If they are lacking in any of these areas, they will not grow to be balanced and outstanding.
In my years of teaching undergraduate students, I have observed some students who were quite spiritual but had character flaws that made them almost repulsive. I have also come across committed Christians of good character, who do not have the discipline to develop their intellect and build skills, therefore, they are not able to dominate in their spheres of influence. Imagine that one has an amazing personality, a good relationship with God, and is quite skilled in what she does, yet the body is ridden with disease. Such a person will not be able to carry out her earthly assignment. You will see from the above examples, that paying attention to the spiritual development, physical development and personality development of your children is critical.
